The Larks (aka The Meadowlarks) are a classic Los Angeles Soul group led by Don Julian. He is my favorite Los Angeles soul singer and I could have chosen any song to showcase him, he is that good! Amazing singer from the 50's and even was a part of music into the 90's when he collaborated with Too Short on his album Shorty The Pimp, which sampled Don Julian's song of the same title. An influential singer/writer/producer from his early days until his death in the late 1990's. I was lucky enough to speak to him on a call in show put on by the Doo Wop Society in the late 80's. I felt privileged and honored to speak to this Doowop, R&B, Soul, Funk legend before his passing.

This is a funky jazz version of the Bob Marley classic "I Shot The Sheriff" with some short drum breaks, fuzz guitars and even a talk box at the end. "Do It Baby" comes in with a hard bass line that was sampled on one of my favorite songs by KRS ONE, "Why Is That?". Just a funky record all the way around, there's no denying it.

Nice double sided Funk record from New York. The "As I Lay Dying" side is a funky beat that begins with a Funkadelic style guitar and some horns that set the tone for a funky situation. "Kool And The Gang" is a nice cover of the Kool and The Gang tune by the same name. This record meets the seal of approval as Melting Pot brings the funk times two.

Mellow but funky, sought after and tough to find Los Angeles Funk / Modern Soul record. Has a primitive sound to it, which is what I like about it. Even though it's over 5 minutes long it doesn't drag, which is more than you can say for a lot of songs of the same length. Enjoy this tune with middle east feel to it and escape to ancient Egypt for a few minutes at least.
