Daily Discovery - Pay Day b/w Wee Baby Blues by Val Martinez - R&B Soul b/w R&B Rocker 45 on RCA Victor #8273
"It's pay day, another week closer to the day I die". Dramatic is an understatement! It's been a while since I've collected a paycheck. Val Martinez brings me back to those days. Back breaking work for limited pay. It reminds me of what Sonny says in the movie "A Bronx Tale", "The working man is a sucker". Only now, I have learned that, it's not what I do but how I perceive what I do that is important. What I focus on grows. I choose to focus on what I love. Today, I can say that I love what I do!
"Everybody join in on that hand clap" is the way the flip side introduces this killer R&B Rocker. This powerful groove, vocals and twangy guitars almost reminds me of Ritchie Valens. Nice double sider!
Daily Discovery - Daddy Roll 'Em b/w I Love You So by GRANDISONS - Northern Soul 45 on RCA Victor #8200
As I listen to Daddy Roll 'Em it sounds like this song is about a pimp. "Julie, girl don't you hear me calling, Do ya. Julie baby don't you understand. Julie, baby been a long time waiting". I might be totally off but there is only one very short verse in this 2 minute song, so it's hard to tell. Have a listen and tell me what you think. On the flip side "I love you so, when the lights are down low and I need you so". This is a trippy record to say the least.
Daily Discovery - My Victrola by Joey Pastrana - Latin Soul 45 on Cotique Records #173. Flip side is Luna Trip by Dickie Goodman
"When I woke up this morning baby you were gone" To my surprise baby, I knew that something was gone". First thought that crossed my mind was his girl left him but it was something worse. Not only did his girl leave him but she stole his record player. Only thing worse than that would be if she took his records too! Talk about a nightmare, wake up in the morning and find that someone stole your record player and records! AHHHHH!
Daily Discovery - It's So Hard by Melvin And Leon - Rare Los Angeles R&B Soul 45 on Marv Records #101. Flip side is "Everything About You".
A cautionary tale. This one goes out to the guys who work hard everyday, just to give their money to their girl at the end of the week. Now that's what I call love with a price tag and an emotional hangover to boot. What ever happened to money can't buy love?. Melvin and Leon's pain is our gain as we hear his frustration on this tough to find underground Los Angeles gem.
Daily Discovery - All In One by The 3 Blue Jays - Rare Beat Ballad Northern Soul 45 on Triode Records #106. Flip side is "Bicycle Ride".
A wicked, stomping little beat with vibes, horns and distorted haunting backing vocals. The lead singer is enticing you with an almost sensual feel to get on the dance floor to do his dance. The name of his dance? The "All In One" which is a mixture of different dances he calls out, the monkey, the twist and the chicken. Listening to and letting my imagination run wild I can totally picture him in the middle of the dance floor in his crisp pressed suit, crazy moves and smooth powerful vocals driving the women wild one dance at a time. This is a relatively unknown beat ballad on the same Triode label that released the legendary Northern Soul "I'm Coming Over" record by Johnny Honeycutt.
Daily Discovery - Hello Stranger by Darius - Rare Los Angeles Northern Soul b/w Psychedelic 45 on Chartmaker Records #419. Flip side is "I Don't Mind".
This little known gem has been in my collection for years, I must share this with you so you can decide which version your favorite. Barbara Lewis, Capitols or Darius. Tough choice but this amazing cover is my favorite version of Hello Stranger. Do you agree?
Daily Discovery - Hey Love by Mr. Clean & The Soul Inc. - Rare Group Sweet Soul 45 on Radio City #500. Flip side "I Bet He Don't Love You"
Extremely rare record from San Diego California. This is the same Radio City label that Rosey Grier's New Yorkers Northern Soul classic was released on. Both sides on this record are Group Soul gold with an incredible cover of the Intruders, "I Bet He Don't Love You" and "Hey Love" which I originally thought was a cover of the Stevie Wonder classic but turned out to be very different upon listening again. "Hey Love" is a cover of the song originally sung by the Rotary Connection and was written by Charles Stepney and Richard Rudolph.
Daily Discovery - Chinito Chinito by Don Tosti - Killer Los Angeles Latin Mambo 45 on Philmos #007. Flip side is "Burlate"
You don't need to understand what the words mean to feel the rhythm. Mambo dance floor filler.
Daily Discovery - Uphill Peace Of Mind by The Gospel Truth - Funk Soul 45 on Kayvette #5123. Flip side is the same. Florida sunshine Soul.
So much soul and emotion in their voices. I hear and feel the struggle and will to climb to a higher plane with these guys. I'm always searching for a better way, this gives me motivation to keep climbing. I would love to find more by this group but at the moment this is their only record in my collection. Any one know any other songs by this band?
Daily Find - I'll Be Your Santa Baby by Rufus Thomas - Christmas Funk Soul 45 on Stax #0187. Flip side "That Makes Christmas Day"
Dedicate this to the love of your life or that person you have always wanted to talk dirty to but didn't know how. You can thank me later. If it works for Rufus it should work for us, right??
