Daily Discovery - Fine Girl b/w Never Let Me Go by Ree Flores & The Duprell's - Chicano Northern Soul / Doowop 45 on Chelan Records #556
Tough to find!
Daily Discovery - Louisiana Groove b/w My Dream by King Solomon - R&B Soul 45 on Cadillac Records #503
Yet another R&B Soul tune that we chose to feature by King Solomon. An amazing R&B vocalist. While this isn't his best, it's definitely an odd one out of Los Angeles. "Louisiana Groove" features The Lad Teens Band, a Chicano Soul group who were at least partially from my home town, Hawthorne California. The Lad Teens also released a tough to find tune on the same label, Cadillac Records #502, called Keep On Rollin' b/w White Rice.
This is not your typical King Solomon, R&B tune. It sounds like King Solomon and his producers were trying to get a nationwide hit with this dance 45 that mentions cities across the U.S. The flip side "My Dream" has the screaming and yelling, party like atmosphere, maybe recorded live? It has mellow and has a creepy vibe to it. It's almost as if King Solomon was going for an impression of James Brown singing, "Try Me". An interesting double sider either way. Enjoy!
Daily Discovery - When My Baby Cries b/w Saving My Love For You by Sunny & The Sunliners - Chicano Soul on Key-Loc Records #1038
I don't know this Sunny Ozuna record that well, but I like it. His raspy voice is so recognizable. A Texas Soul gem that should start getting play in the steady growing underground Chicano Soul circle.
Daily Discovery - That Certain Tenderness b/w Things Get Worse by Justice V - East Los Angeles Soul 45 Panorama Records #55
I initially bought this record for the Northern Soul side "Things Get Worse". I flipped the record over to hear an East LA Soul Chicano Soul cut worthy of being on any of Art Laboe's compilations. Although I don't think they are Chicano they definitely were influenced by the genre. I love the honesty in this tune, my favorite part is the rap in the middle that starts with, "Darling, I know that sometimes I'm pretty hard to live with". I won't ruin the rest of the song for you, because the rap is the meat of the song. This type of honesty is something I choose to work on daily.
Daily Find - Please Call Me Baby by Joe Bravo & The Sunglows - Chicano Soul Lp Certron #4015. Texas Chicano Tex-Mex Soul. This the same Joe Bravo, label mate of the Chicano Soul legend Sunny Ozuna. How many phone calls have waited for in your life? I can't deny, I have been there and done that.
Daily Discovery - Image Of A Star by (Francisco) Aguabella - Chicano Soul 45 on Epsilon Records #806. Killer Latin Chicano Soul double sider. The flip side is an up and coming Modern Soul dancer "I Wanna Know". Check out this mellow tune with a beautiful lead vocal. I was blessed to see Aguabella play at LACMA a couple of years ago, before he left us.
Daily Discovery - Ain't No Big Thing by Albert Esberido & The Majestic Four - Rare Chicano Northern Soul. Tina records out of Los Angeles, the flip side is La Bamba (La Bomba). This one is out of the vaults, after many years it's time to share this one with the world. Sit back and trip out on this underground jam.
Daily Discovery - I'll Never Forget You by Mystic. Extremely Rare Chicano Soul Lp from Chicago on A.R.T. records #100. That's The Kind Of Love is another Sweet Soul must have of this Lp. Has a couple Modern Soul Boogie cuts also.
Daily Discovery - Feeling some Chicano Soul. Nice cover of the Vicente Fernandez classic - Volver Volver by Los Lobos
